AkvaVej, a Climate Road that absorbs, cleanses and re-uses water
Permeable road surfaces, made of asphalt, stone or polymer, have proven their value for local rainwater harvesting – but can they integrate even more functions? They can, with the help of smart road subbases and practical and cost-efficient filter technology.
Pilot project for a new concept
AkvaVej is a pilot site on a public road in the Greater Copenhagen suburb Kastrup. The new system unifies permeable surfaces with highly porous subbase layers and easy-to-maintain filtration technology, which enable to road to absorb, retain and purify rainwater and run-off. The road is a joint project of Tårnby Municipality, The Danish Technological institute and manufacturers NCC Industry and IBF Concrete.
Functional Layers
When water falls on AkvaVej, it first infiltrates into the subbase layers (NCC DrænAf and NCC DrænStabil) from where it reaches drainage pipes, which ultimately lead towards the filtration system. The filtration elements remove particles, salt and oil from the water, which, once purified, discharges towards infiltration sites or recreational elements, such as green basins, water fountains or water basins.
Avoiding costly sewer extensions
A positive side effect of porous materials is the simple maintenance and repair from aboveground as opposed to the complex works related to sewer systems. AkvaVej combines tried and proven elements in a scalable systemic way. The concept intends to demonstrate that integrated climate road concepts can fulfill the same functions as a rainwater sewer system, while benefitting from lower cost for establishment, maintenance and rainwater treatment.
Visit AkvaVej and other Climate Roads
AkvaVej is not the only climate-road concept in Greater Copenhagen. There are various other sites in the city, which demonstrate different approaches and elements to protect the urban space from flooding.
