Digital solutions can bring great benefits to the water sector
The Global Water Intelligence report “Water’s Digital Future” summarizes the potential for digitization of the water sector. The report points to a significant potential for optimization of primary operations, especially when it comes to the management of drinking water, wastewater and rain water – provided that the right investments are implemented.
Against this background the Smart Water project has analyzed the specific needs and opportunities for digital solutions in a Danish context.
New Smart Water report
The report ‘Smart Water – Digitalization in the Water Sector’ is the final result of the Smart Water project collaboration between CALL Copenhagen, CLEAN (Danish Cleantech Cluster), the City of Copenhagen and the utility company Frederiksberg Forsyning.
The report draws on 25 interviews with stakeholders in the Capital Region’s water sector. Read or download it below!

7 important focus areas
According to the report, digital solutions are particularly valuable if developed and applied in these seven areas:
- Planning and management of network maintenance
- Climate adaptation: Controlling the urban drainage infrastructure, optimizing local drainage solutions on a catchment scale, asset management for SUD-solutions (sustainable urban drainage), catchment based planning models for active control systems and development of technology for active flow control in catchments
- Forecasts of cloudbursts
- Water quality: Urban runoff from roads and other impervious surfaces, health issues related to surface drainage and real-time monitoring of overflows
- Registration of citizen inquiries about water-related problems
- Utilization of existing data
- Data for optimal control of the operation of manholes and gutters.
Conference gathered 100 stakeholders
The key findings were presented on December 6, 2018 at the conference ‘Smart Water – Digitalization in the Water Sector’ hosted by CALL Copenhagen. More than a 100 stakeholders from municipalities, utilities, companies, authorities and knowledge institutions attended the conference. They discussed the challenges, potentials and innovative cooperation opportunities of digitization in the water sector.
