Lindevangs Park – An Urban Oasis, Providing Space for Protection & Recreation
Once a slightly overgrown and darkish park, Lindevangs Park (Danish: Lindevangsparken) today does not only welcome those seeking relaxation, but also provides an abundance of space for storm water and thereby protects the neighborhood from flooding.
Dual Purpose Elements
Lindevangs Park is a beautiful example for a combined planning and design approach, integrating recreational and protective elements in the same public development project.
In the course of the renovation, the park received two elements, which double in function: a large green basin and green trench. The basin, which has a stable concrete base the center, serves as a place for public gathering on almost all days of the year. It can however also function as a storm water overflow, in case of heavy cloudbursts, which occur on average one to two times per year. The east side of the park received a long green and nature-like trench, which is a place for berry picking, play and other recreational activities on most days, and serves as a natural infiltration bed for rainfall and as temporary retention space for heavy rainfall.
New Capacities and Partnerships
The newly created capacity to retain water inside the park enabled the city to decouple the roofs and streets north of the park from the sewer system. The system thereby received long needed extra capacities to handle cloudburst water. The project was a joint initiative of the technical administration of Frederiksberg, the local utility company Frederiksberg Forsyning, Marianne Levinsen Landscape Architects and the engineering consultancy NIRAS.
See for Yourself
Join us for a tour of the park, following the path of the water from where it falls in the catchment area all the way into the park system, where it fills the green trenches and basins and infiltrates naturally.
